Diabetes-Friendly Drinks — and What to Avoid

Drinks are the easiest thing to adjust when you are managing blood sugar, and often the fastest to show an effect.

If you are managing blood sugar, drinks are the easiest place to start. Liquid sugar reaches the bloodstream faster than solid food, so reducing it shows results quickly.

Safe choices through the day

  • Water — the foundation, and most people drink less than they need
  • Cinnamon steeped in hot water, unsweetened
  • Green tea or herbal infusions such as hibiscus, unsweetened
  • Water with lemon or cucumber slices if plain water gets boring

Drinks to avoid

  • Soft drinks and packaged juices
  • Concentrated fresh juice — whole fruit is better because the fibre stays
  • Hot drinks with sugar or sweetened syrup

No drink treats diabetes. Blood sugar is controlled by your overall eating pattern, medication, movement and sleep together.

If you take medication or insulin, a large change in food or drink can affect your dose — speak to your doctor before adjusting. This article is general information, not a substitute for a consultation.
